My Final Exam Story Essay This was it. I put my pen down. Putting my pen down meant that it was the end. As I waited for the invigilators to come forward to collect my paper, I reflected on my journey. It was strangely both lonesome yet exciting as I made new friends along the way, like those from my study groups and coffee. Coffee and I had become best friends and I could not live without it. That was then. Perhaps it was now time to start having some new friends. It all began when I almost failed all my subjects and the endless chiding I received from my parents together with their disappointment made me so guilty. Thus it began, the eventful journey of helping myself. It started with all the snubs I received from my so-called ‘friends’ as the fact that I was pulling my socks up offended those around me, as I received questions like why I was suddenly such a ‘nerd’, why I could not be as laid back as them and take things easy. I was eventually left to my own devices and became the class outcast. Who would have thought the act of trying to improve oneself led to reducing one’s social circle? It did not help my grades had not made any marked improvement and got me really thinking if I was really in a better place than before. One day, things changed. I had gone to the school library, dragging my heavy-laden bag to an empty table. As soon as I sat down, a girl approached me. She was from the next class and her name was Alice. Alice appeared shy but I detected a sense of determination behind her wide-rimmed glasses. After talking about a common teacher we shared, she asked me if I wanted to join her study group. I was stunned into silence. As I looked nervously over at her table to see the group of people sitting there, I was mildly taken aback that they looked as equally nervous as I was. Perhaps they have heard how notorious my class was and was thinking twice whether this was a good idea. I definitely was. After a moment’s hesitation, Alice mentioned that they met up with Mrs Tana every Wednesday afternoon to clarify any questions they had and I was welcome to join them then. That perked me up. Mrs Tana did not teach my class but she was famous as she was a good teacher. That Wednesday, I appeared at Alice’s group. The level of support I received from my new study group was encouraging. Even Mrs Tana, who did not know me well, said kind words after observing the amount of effort I put in my work despite my rather unintelligent questions. I could not have been anymore surprised how things had turned out. Of course that was only the first step. Things were not without challenges. My brother would pretend he was doing me a favour when I took a break from studying to use the computer of which he would loudly howl to my parents, â€Å"Mum, someone’s on the computer! † I gave him a deathly stare with a painful promise that he would get retaliation for that. However, all was forgotten as I received a message from Alice. The New Deal increased the government's regulation and intervention and the economic system, thus temporarily abandoning the capitalism system and turning toward socialism to find the answer. The answer... the New Deal. Socialism is usually thought of as a form of government that advocates public ownership and public control of wealth (Britannica Jr. Encyclopedia 1980, p.231). In other words, a socialistic government wants the wealth of the nation spread out in such a way that the money is equally distributed among the country's citizens. Socialism is in favor of tearing down the class structure and forming a classless society. In this way, it was born out of Marxism, whose founder was Karl Marx. Leaders of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union said that their country used socialism as a major step towards "building communism". However most socialist political parties in democratic countries of the West rejected the Communist idea of socialism. Socialists prefer the government ownership of industries that are vital to a country's welfare. These include the coal, oil, iron, and steel industries. The basic idea favored by all Socialists is the public ownership and use of property in order to extend the benefits of wealth more equally. Many economic, political, and social factor lead up to the New Deal. When staggering statistics such as 25% unemployment, and the fact that 20% of NYC school children were underwieght and malnourished (World Book, p.200) hit the White House, the government knew something had to be done. With the economy at on all time low people wanted change, Roosevelt's legislative program represented a new way of government for capitalism in America. Roosevelt first used the term "new deal" when he accepted the Democratic presidental nomination in 1932. He said "I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people." When Roosevelt became President on March 4, 1933, business was at a standstill and a feeling of panic hit the nation (World Book, Vol.14, p.200). Roosevelt responded with a controversial policy that rocked the nation and what our nation stood for. Roosevelt's New Deal programs aimed at three R's- relief, recovery, and reform. The government established short range goals that included relief and immediate recovery, especially in the first two years. They then set up long-range goals which included permanent recovery and reform of current abuses particuarly those that produced the boom-or-bust catastrophe (World Book, Vol.14, p.748). The Congress authorized the National Recovery Administration (NRA) in a daring attempt to simulate a nationwide comeback. This scheme was to perform immediate relief with long range recovery and reform. It was designed to assist industry, labor, and the unemployed by setting standards for prices, wages, and hours. It also guaranteed the labor's right to organize unions and to bargain collectively with employers through agents of their own choosing (America The Glorious Republic). The NRA gave the President power to regulate interstate commerce. This power was originally given to Congress. While the NRA was effective it was bringing America closer to socialism by giving the President unconstitutional powers. The NRA was later ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme court. The Federal Emergency Relief Act (FERA) was the first major effort of the new Congress to cope with the millions of adult unemployed. The main importance was immediate relief of economic disaster rather than long range recovery. This agency was founded in 1933 to cooperate with the states in relieving hardships caused by unemployment and drought.(Economic History of the U.S., vol. 9). By letting the unemployed draw unemployment payments, it moved American society towards what has been called"the Welfare State." In this situation, with the possibility existing of inflicting severe emotional damage on an already grieving soul, should Marlow have lied? Of course, the answer is neither simple nor short, and depends heavily on who is asked. The most relevant perspective naturally comes from Marlow himself. Marlow makes his feelings about lying clear early in his adventure. â€Å"You know I hate, detest, and can’t bear a lie, not because I am straighter than the rest of us, but simply because it appals me. There is a taint of death, a flavour of mortality in lies, – which is exactly what I hate and detest in the world – what I want to forget. It makes me miserable and sick†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Heart, pp49-50). Marlow doesn’t hold much back here. He believes that lies are what is wrong with the world. That said, it seems that a third-person Marlow would severely disapprove of his actions, and would believe that he should have told the truth. In Langston Hughes poem â€Å"Let America be America Again† he talks about how America should return to the way that it was perceived to be in the dreams before America was truly America. Throughout the poem he uses various methods to evoke the patriotic images and dreams that he feels America should and will eventually be. Hughes states that America is supposed to be a place of equality for everyone including both white and colored people. During this period in time though there was not equality for everyone.Hughes talks about an America where both whites and colored people will have equality in all aspects socially, politically, and economically. What Hughes is saying is that both whites and colored people should be treated equally when looking for job opportunities, at the voting booths, and in public society itself. Langston Hughes thoughts of what America should be during this current state are relevant in the way that they refer to all people being treated equally and ho w in Americas currents state equality is greatly needed.To continue on Langston Hughes talks about what the American Dream is and who conceived it. The American dream was the dream of a land where there would be complete peace and equality. This dream was conceived by all the people who came over to this land to build America from the ground up; these people would be known as the first Americans. The dream of building a country from the ground up that would be both peaceful and have equality for everyone was an extremely daring task for these people. This is because they had to turn on their own previous countries and declare their own independence.The first Americans saw this as a very important thing to do if they were going to build America to be the country of equality that they dreamed of. Furthermore, there were also some people who distorted the American dream by searching for their own personal success. The people that distorted the American dream would be the slave owning A mericans themselves. They did not create slavery just with the intentions of having colored people as personal helpers, it was more towards gaining success in large corporations and companies.The more slaves you could have the more products your company would be able to produce, and during Americas current growing state a variety of products were needed in high demand. Therefore the American dream was distorted by the Americans whom were slave owners. Large corporations and companies like tobacco and cotton plantations also contributed to the building of America. It’s not the companies or corporations themselves that just contributed to the building of America but the people who worked for them. This would include all white, colored, and slave workers.The ways that these companies are not free is due to the fact that some of them use slaves and discriminated against colored people during this time. If companies within America are not treating people equally, then America is n ot seen as a country of equality and freedom. Langston Hughes also shows us his mood throughout the poem while he is explaining his thoughts. Hughes mood would be one of anger and resentment because America is not turning out to be the land that it was promised to be, or the land that many people dream of for him.Hughes keeps this mood from the begging of the poem to the end of the poem in hopes that he will get his point across to the rest of America. His goal by writing this poem the way he did was mainly to express his ideas of how he feels America should be currently. These would be the white exploiters who could also be recognized as slave owners or discriminators, and the exploited would be the minority of colored  people and slaves.What we could change to fit today’s society would be to get rid of the level of discrimination that there was during this time in history, as well as abolish slavery completely. No the dream is not still viable because Langston Hughes dreams were for equality and for the people to be protected equally under the same laws and law enforcement. In the end it’s truly up to everyones individual self to live their lives, due to the fact that America does not completely control our lives.

The Scientific Possibilities of Time Travel

Stories regarding travel into the past and the future have long captured our imagination, but the question of whether time travel is possible is a thorny one that gets right to the heart of understanding what physicists mean when they use the word time.   Modern physics teaches us that time is one of the most mysterious aspects of our universe, though it may at first seem straightforward. Einstein revolutionized our understanding of the concept, but even with this revised understanding, some scientists still ponder the question of whether or not ​time actually exists or whether it is a mere stubbornly persistent illusion (as Einstein once called it). Whatever time is, though, physicists (and fiction writers) have found some interesting ways to manipulate it to consider traversing it in unorthodox ways. Time and Relativity Though referenced in H.G. Wells The Time Machine (1895), the actual science of time travel didnt come into being until well into the twentieth century, as a side-effect of Albert Einsteins theory of general relativity (developed in 1915). Relativity describes the physical fabric of the universe in terms of a 4-dimensional spacetime, which includes three spatial dimensions (up/down, left/right, and front/back) along with one time dimension. Under this theory, which has been proven by numerous experiments over the last century, gravity is a result of the bending of this spacetime in response to the presence of matter. In other words, given a certain configuration of matter, the actual spacetime fabric of the universe can be altered in significant ways. One of the amazing consequences of relativity is that movement can result in a difference in the way time passes, a process known as time dilation. This is most dramatically manifested in the classic Twin Paradox. In this method of time travel, you can move into the future faster than normal, but theres not really any way back. (Theres a slight exception, but more on that later in the article.) Early Time Travel In 1937, Scottish physicist W. J. van Stockum first applied general relativity in a way that opened the door for time travel. By applying the equation of general relativity to a situation with an infinitely long, extremely dense rotating cylinder (kind of like an endless barbershop pole). The rotation of such a massive object actually creates a phenomenon known as frame dragging, which is that it actually drags spacetime along with it. Van Stockum found that in this situation, you could create a path in 4-dimensional spacetime which began and ended at the same point - something called a closed timelike curve - which is the physical result that allows time travel. You can set off in a space ship and travel a path which brings you back to the exact same moment you started out at. Though an intriguing result, this was a fairly contrived situation, so there wasnt really much concern about it taking place. A new interpretation was about to come along, however, which was much more controversial. In 1949, the mathematician Kurt Godel - a friend of Einsteins and a colleague at Princeton Universitys Institute for Advanced Study - decided to tackle a situation where the whole universe is rotating. In Godels solutions, time travel was actually allowed by the equations if the universe were rotating. A rotating universe could itself function as a time machine. Now, if the universe were rotating, there would be ways to detect it (light beams would bend, for example, if the whole universe were rotating), and so far the evidence is overwhelmingly strong that there is no sort of universal rotation. So again, time travel is ruled out by this particular set of results. But the fact is that things in the universe do rotate, and that again opens up the possibility. Time Travel and Black Holes In 1963, New Zealand mathematician Roy Kerr used the field equations to analyze a rotating black hole, called a Kerr black hole, and found that the results allowed a path through a wormhole in the black hole, missing the singularity at the center, and make it out the other end. This scenario also allows for closed timelike curves, as theoretical physicist Kip Thorne realized years later. In the early 1980s, while Carl Sagan worked on his 1985 novel Contact, he approached Kip Thorne with a question about the physics of time travel, which inspired Thorne to examine the concept of using a black hole as a means of time travel. Together with the physicist Sung-Won Kim, Thorne realized that you could (in theory) have a black hole with a wormhole connecting it to another point in space held open by some form of negative energy. But just because you have a wormhole doesnt mean that you have a time machine. Now, lets assume that you could move one end of the wormhole (the movable end). You place the movable end on a spaceship, shooting it off into space at nearly the speed of light. Time dilation kicks in, and the time experienced by the movable end is much less than the time experienced by the fixed end.
